arc en rêve centre d’architecture kicks off 2011 with an exhibition devoted to the work of internationally renowned French designers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec. album is the first exhibition of their work in France, following shows at the Design Museum in London (2002), the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles (2004) and the Boijmans van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam (2004).

Presented in the 4,000 quare foot main gallery at arc en rêve in Bordeaux, album is a unique show that aims to present a panorama exclusively made up of pictures, extending from everyday details to a global approach.

In the six exhibition areas, organised thematically, album features some 800 documents, inspirational and preparatory drawings, sketches and archive photos by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec. Their intention is to present all these documents at the same level, whether they relate to industrial projects, galleries, architectural designs or research projects, in order to convey just what lies behind their multi-facetted production. This means that even when there a differences in scale, all the visuals are framed in exactly the same way so that there is no hierarchy between them. For instance, they have chosen to devote an entire wall to about a hundred drawings of chairs that have never been made. The exhibition aims to provide an insight into Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec’s unique world, via a mode of presentation that is unusual for a design show; the visitor will discover a panorama that is both unified and multi-facetted, from floor to ceiling. The whole exhibition forms a kind of treasure trail between the various projects and approaches that coexist in their workshops. Each exhibition area, with its deliberately simple presentation method, offers the keys to a better understanding of Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec’s work.

On Friday 28 January, arc en rêve centre d’architecture, in partnership with Frac Aquitaine, is organising a conference entitled Blanc d’essai: art, architecture, design to coincide with both album, Ronan et Erwan Bouroullec and Tout ce que vous voulez savoir sur le blanc, a show that opens at Frac Aquitaine on the same day. The conference will bring together personalities and experts from the world of art, architecture, design and industry, and will also explore philosophical and sociological perspectives.

The exhibition album is opened from January 17th to March 17th, 2011.
