Paola Antonelli, Design Curator of Museum of Modern Art in New York was one of the speakers at the recent TED conference in Monterey. Here is an interesting quote (found in the TED blog) from her presentation; “I’m Italian, and in Italy, design is normal…”.
That is very true. I quite often (even if I’m from design savvy Scandinavia) hold Italy as one of the best examples of a country with broad use of design in both industry and society. Olivetti is probably one of the best examples. Its corporate style, design identity and culture have placed them forever in the European industrial history books. The Italian furniture and fashion industries have also produced loads of strong design driven brands like Cassina, B&B Italian and Giorgio Armani to mention a few.
