Never use white type on a black background

Never Use White Type on a Black Background: And 50 Other Ridiculous Design Rules is a new and interesting book from Bispublishers.

The world of fashion and design is inundated with a seemingly endless list of rules. Think of ‘Less is More’, ‘Form Follows Function’, ‘Keep it Simple’, ‘Dress Your Age’ and the list goes on and on. They’re familiar sayings that some designers consider to be valuable words of wisdom, which serve as a guiding line and source of inspiration.
To others, these rules are mere restrictions: design dogmas and fashion formulae that need to be bended, twisted or broken altogether.

Granted, creativity knows no bounds and therefore it seems rather ridiculous to restrict that creativity by sticking to a couple of age-old rules. However, in some cases the rules seem more like the basic principles that every designer should love, honor and obey.
Never Use White Type on a Black Background And 50 other Ridiculous Design Rules collects 51 famous and obscure design rules that are accompanied by chronologically placed quotes (courtesy of designers, architects, fashion designers, typographers and other creatives) and an image that either negates or supports the rule.

Whichever side of the fence you yourself are sitting on in the rules debate, you’re bound to find this book a source of inspiration, comfort, joy or just good old fun. Enjoy.

Humanistic graphic design

David Carlson, 7 December, 2008

Sissi Edholm and Lisa Ullenius are two graphic designers based in Stockholm, Sweden who work together under the name Edholm Ullenius. They met at Beckmans School of Design in Stockholm and have been a team since then. Their work include posters, book covers, fabric prints and post cards + a lot more. Over the years they have worked with The Museum of National Antiquities and Museum of modern art in Stockholm, Bookbinders design and IKEA to mention a few.

I have pasted some images below of their interesting work and clever ideas. I like the playfulness and the humanistic feeling a lot. It almost reminds me of the work of the two Swedish maestros Jan Melin and Anders Österlin.

Diane von Furstenberg designing business cards

David Carlson, 31 August, 2007

johnlook.com_diane_von_furstenberg

A week ago New York-based fashion icon Diane von Furstenberg together with internet based design company JohnLook.com launched a collection of limited edition of personal business cards and correspondence cards, exclusively for Sweden. The design is based on Diane von Furstenberg’s classic vintage print from the 70’s called ”Diamond Cubes”. The cards can be seen as a lifestyle accessory especially designed to boost private networking and are only for sale from August 23 until November 23.

“I have always been impressed by Swedish designs. I am flattered that one of my prints is included in this portfolio”, says Diane von Furstenberg about the partnership. The Diane von Furstenberg cards are part of the JohnLook.com Limited Edition series with interesting designers. Keep your eyes open for further collaborations.

In general the business idea behind JohnLook.com is interesting. It’s sort of DIY graphic design. The customers register themselves and in that way get their personal info on the cards. In total you will find 40 basic graphic designs to play with. A simple and fast way to create personal and individual business cards (if your best friend isn’t a graphic designer…).
