Rowdy furniture

David Carlson, 5 February, 2010

Rowdy is a new seating system from David design (a company which I founded back in 1988, and ran until I left it in the mid 00s). Rowdy is designed by Peter Andersson and Matti Klenell.

The idea behind the product is simple; with inspiration from various examples of how the fashion world succeds in combining design value and brand experience with a competitive price, Matti and Peter created a simplified, almost geometrical set of seating tools. The different blocks can be combined in many ways thus creating a seating landscape.

In order to obtain a price positioning that would allow more people to buy the chair the design is simplified, almost unsophisticated by purpose, in order to minimalize use of material and  to make it uncomplicated to produce and transport.

The character and the design of the chair, aswell as the concept in itself, is well described through the product name;  Rowdy means

row·dy (rou’dē)

n.   pl. row·dies

A rough, disorderly person.

adj.   row·di·er, row·di·est

Disorderly; rough: rowdy teenagers; a rowdy beer party

No Early Birds

David Carlson, 2 February, 2010

no_early_birds

Don´t get confused, NoEarlyBirds is not a newly discovered species. It is the name of a new Swedish furniture manufacturer and the result of a 10 year old dream of architect Per Söderberg and creative director Peter Simonsson to create a brand that reflects their personal believes regarding design and lifestyle.

With over 20 years of working experience in the fields of interior design, architecture and the fashion industry, they now felt the time was right to realize their vision based on the values emotional, inspirational, uncompromising and honesty. The first collection by NoEarlyBirds goes by the name of “New Habits”. A system of shelves, tables, benches and a stool based on an ingenious cross-leg structure inspired by the distinctive shape of a birds leg.

The almost obvious, yet innovative design and the ambition to create an extensive and coherent collection with interesting colours, materials and detailing – this is what makes the whole just as interesting as the parts.

“With the New Habits collection I wish to encourage new ways of furnishing homes and public spaces, while at the same creating timeless furnitures that age with beauty”, says Per.

We want to be able to control every step of the production and we have been extremely careful in the choice of materials and finishes regarding quality and environmental impact. To produce in Sweden was therefore a natural choice.

Per Söderberg holds a degree from the Domus Academy, Milan. Among his former projects you’ll find the storage system Funk, private houses, shops, restaurants and office interiors for clients such as Moschino, J.Lindeberg and Orrefors. Peter Simonsson has formerly worked at David Design, Adidas and Björn Borg among others. Design agency Kurppa PHA and photographer Peter Gehrke are also involved in the project.

Arik Levy bottle design for A Scent by Issey Miyake

David Carlson, 22 July, 2009

arik_levy_for_issey_miyake

Developing this design was a great challenge for me, because it required to build a “bridge” between Issey Miyake’s philosophy and mine… I had to create the “new”, being utterly innovative and have zero compromises. It was a great creative process where all sides were enthusiastic and everybody was aiming to achieve excellent results. i have capitalized the narrative form of a bottle, given it a new definition  and added a refining value to it. The reference point was the notion of RAW-INDUSTRIAL-ART. When handling a raw block of glass out of the mould and cutting it, we discover the great contrast between the absolute transparency of the core and the rough sides… that also expresses the main concept of the extrusion. I used the extrusion idea to create the connection between Miyake’s concepts in fashion and my definition of the container’s size. The rest of the line, bath gel, body lotion and other products are in continuity with this concept. Thanks to this bottle we get away from the proportional scale container sizing that is so common in the cosmetic industry. Arik Levy

The Nature Manifesto

David Carlson, 1 June, 2009

michel_bussien

The Degree Exhibition at Konstfack, University college of arts, crafts and design in Stockholm presents the 2009 degree students: artists, designers, craftsmen and art teacher educators. For the first time in Konstfack’s history you can see all the degree projects at the same time.

We picked the Growing chair by Michel Bussein as an example.

michel_bussien

Below is his Nature Manifesto:

Having evolved from nature, we have gradually differentiated ourselves from it.
Modern society has come to build itself on the perception that nature and man are separated.
This differentiation has come to inhibit us and our way of creating.
We have now reached the point when the way forward is going back.

We have to accept that we and everything we create are part of nature.
This mindset is essential for evolution as a whole.
When applying this to our way of thinking we will liberate ourselves from stagnated conventions.

To move further we need to incorporate the living matter that surrounds us.
Let us use the complexity of living nature and include it in our creations.
These creations will then redefine the way we reconstruct nature.
Only then will we truly move forward.

It is time for man and nature to reunite.

Milan Design Week 2009 snapshots

David Carlson, 28 April, 2009

The other day I presented my three best moments from this years Milan Design Week; Maison Martin Margiela, Senseware and Richard Ginori @ Taste Lounge. Not for the furniture though, which would be obvious at a furniture fair/design week, but for the ambience and the creativity. Today I’m posting a series of snapshots from the Milan Design week 2009. I have to admit that I didn’t spend that many minutes checking new products this year. I mean, haven’t we seen it all before? The colour of the year is green, or black, or white, or red… So I decided to look for something else. Maybe to find what’s important and relevant? The little things that make a different. What’s luxury (other than a new cool chair), what’s culturally connected to our way of life?

I don’t know if I got all the answers, but still I found some good ideas here and there. I didn’t look for design out of a business perspective this year. Or maybe that was exactly what I did?

Here we go.
