Einstein’s watch and Steve McQeen’s driving license

David Carlson, 12 November, 2009

einsteins_watch

Exclusive online shop 20ltd has recently released a new book called Einstein’s watch.

Newspapers and magazines are never short of glossy images urging us what to aspire to. But what things really do represent the world’s most desirable possessions? Are they necessarily expensive or can they cost nothing at all? Are they always the subject of global fame or are they frequently obscured from the public’s gaze and imagination? In this charming departure from the usual yawnful, consumerist commentary, Jolyon Fenwick and Marcus Husselby conduct a judicious review of the year’s available treasures. Their (almost) serious-minded selection takes the reader on a sublimely itinerant journey: from icons of high and popular culture to turning-points in history; from the apex of Hollywood glamour to the most closely-guarded of government secrets; from 104km above the earth to 100ft below the London streets; from the loftiest prices of the world’s great salerooms to the gloriously free-of-charge.

20ltd

Items featured include: King Kong’s Head, a collection of the Braille edition of Playboy, secret MI6 tunnels, Gandhi’s glasses, Steve McQueen’s motorbike licence, the Space Shuttle Endeavour, Michaelangelo’s first ever painting and the last picture of Marilyn Monroe.

Never use white type on a black background

David Carlson, 25 May, 2009

Never Use White Type on a Black Background: And 50 Other Ridiculous Design Rules is a new and interesting book from Bispublishers.

The world of fashion and design is inundated with a seemingly endless list of rules. Think of ‘Less is More’, ‘Form Follows Function’, ‘Keep it Simple’, ‘Dress Your Age’ and the list goes on and on. They’re familiar sayings that some designers consider to be valuable words of wisdom, which serve as a guiding line and source of inspiration.
To others, these rules are mere restrictions: design dogmas and fashion formulae that need to be bended, twisted or broken altogether.

good_design
Granted, creativity knows no bounds and therefore it seems rather ridiculous to restrict that creativity by sticking to a couple of age-old rules. However, in some cases the rules seem more like the basic principles that every designer should love, honor and obey.
Never Use White Type on a Black Background And 50 other Ridiculous Design Rules collects 51 famous and obscure design rules that are accompanied by chronologically placed quotes (courtesy of designers, architects, fashion designers, typographers and other creatives) and an image that either negates or supports the rule.

design_advice
Whichever side of the fence you yourself are sitting on in the rules debate, you’re bound to find this book a source of inspiration, comfort, joy or just good old fun. Enjoy.

New book about sustainable design

David Carlson, 28 April, 2008

I’m proud to announce that my knowledge company Designboost has released its first annual book named “Designboost 07″. It’s the first in a series of books that in words, pictures and moving media describes the work of Designboost. Designboost is a knowledge company that helps companies and organisations to learn more about design in general and sustainable design in particular and how to use it as a competitive weapon and turn it into a business advantage.

The book “Designboost 07″ is built on the vision “sharing design knowledge” with different texts about sustainable design from Designboost “boosters” and friends. Among the contributors you will find acclaimed personalities like Mathilda Tham - professor at Beckmans College of design, Sean Pillot de Chenecey - consumer insight and brand development, Kristina Börjesson - PhD research associate/Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, Tim Power - architect and Jennifer Leonard - designer researcher and writer/IDEO (among others).

‘Designboost 2007′ also brings forward all the one-liner quotes about sustainable design written by the participants at the main event that took place in Malmö October 17–19, 2007. On top of this different conceptualizations of sustainable design by a range of international design driven companies are presented.

At the end of the book a DVD is inserted with some different films about Designboost and its activities. There is also filmed interviews with all the participants at the 2007 main event.

17 Swedish designers in New York

David Carlson, 15 March, 2007

17-swedish-designers

Some time ago I wrote about the new book 17 Swedish designers - chez Pascal in this blog. The 17 Swedish female designers presented in the book will also exhibit together in New York. The exhibition starts March 22 and will take place at Just Scandinavian, 161 Hudson street.

Women have been active in Swedish design throughout the twentieth century, first in the textile field and later primarily in ceramics and glass. Today, women are represented in all aspects of the profession, creating innovative works in industrial and graphic design, furniture, ceramics, glass, metalwork and textiles. They have made invaluable contributions to international design, working both independently and in an interdisciplinary manner, using various methods of production and new technology and materials.

The 17 Swedish designers are Pia Amsell, Carina Seth Andersson, Monica Förster, Lotta Külhorn, Pia Törnell, Eva Schildt, Ulrika Mårtensson, Lena Bergström, Camilla Diedrich, Sara Szyber, Anna von Schewen, Anna Lerinder, Nina Jobs, Barbro Wesslander, Anna Kraitz, Front and Anki Gneib.
