Inspiration, people, products

David Carlson, 19 May, 2008

OPENnetwork is a tool for the creative industry by Danish Lynfbrikken. It’s all about inspiration, people and products. It’s a Panel-based rendering engine allowing mixing and comparison of multi-section content side-by-side as the basic information architecture - keeping the “let me quickly see what’s here” functionality from the old site, but greatly enhancing it’s potential. You can easily create collections of your favourites

The “Inspiration” section is populated by content gathered through numerous RSS feeds. Various workflows based on Yahoo Pipes (among others) are used to pull hard to get content, like Flickr Sets. Keeping the content sources for the “Inspiration” section strictly remote, allowed the developers to tap into the multitude of (mostly) freely available tools developed to manage the publication of online content - providing the users of OPENnetwork with a flexible and ever increasing platform of tools, like mobile-blogging, and the availability of highly personalized workflows for content publication. Making OPENnetwork exist as a node in a network rather than yet another self centered hub.

Of the numerous innovative features of the site, the ability to save a given selection of panels into a Collection (available as a RSS feed, permalink-able and print-able) makes it possible for users to create design Issues of their own. Products can be compared and saved as share-able inspiration or shopping lists, News articles can be referenced side by side and Persons can be located and recommended.

David Carlson, 29 March, 2007

acne-paper

The spring issue of the Acne Paper is out. It is a collaboration between Acne Jeans, Acne Film, Acne Digital and Acne Creative. Each issue is created around one key idea - a timeless theme (this time it is playfulness) that in various ways touches all those working in the creative fields regardless of age, cultural background or social status. In an eclectic yet coherent mix portrait, fashion and art photography as well as interviews, memoirs and prose the editorial narrative aims to unite artistic minds of all generations. It pays tribute to past luminaries whilst still keeping a firm grip on the present, evoking something timeless, something nostalgic yet refrereshingly modern. By moving effortlessly between high and popular culture Acne Paper is a glamorous and intelligent magazine celebrating personality, authenticity and style.

Acne Paper is available through leading magazine and book stores. You can subscribe to Acne Paper directly at their website.

I did an interview with Acne Jeans in an earlier issue of the David Report bulletin which you can read here.

Ten rules about starting a new magazine

David Carlson, 27 February, 2007

Monocle
Andrew Tuck is editor of the newly started Monocle magazine. In this article from The Independent (where he used to work) he reveals ten rules about starting a new magazine.

1) You need a good name.

2) Forget the focus groups.

3) Spot the opportunity.

4) Invest in photography.

5) Hire an international team.

6) Celebrate print.

7) But remember the world’s gone mobile.

8) Work the time zones.

9) Keep it simple.

10) You can forget your health regime.

Please read The Independent article for a complete explanation of the different rules by Andrew Tuck. If it works? Buy a copy of Monocle at a newsstand and judge yourself. Monocle retails for approximate £ 5.

If you can’t wait - here is a quick view by Magculture on the Monocle magazine and here is a video interview with Tyler Brule by Reuters.

dwell updated homepage

David Carlson, 24 February, 2007

dwell

San Francisco-based design magazine dwell has updated their homepage recently. It is interesting to see that the classic print magazines like dwell as well as Dazed and Confused and Frame (reported about earlier here) concentrates more and more on digital web content. The new format of dwell includes podcasts, videos and a daily updated blog. Unfortunately no RSS subscription. We will probably see more extensive web content from further magazines in the future. Newly started Monocle by Tyler Brule is a good example.

UPDATE: I just got the information that there is a feed as well. Just a little difficult to find. Here’s the link: http://www.dwell.com/daily/blog/rss

Tyler Brule launches Monocle

David Carlson, 17 February, 2007

tyler-brule-monocle

Tyler Brule launches the magazine Monocle this week. Monocle is a new global media brand that combines print, web and broadcast components in a highly original and innovative way. With Monocle Tyler Brule would like to create a community of the most interested and interesting people in the world. The target group could be described as well-educated and well-heeled. The heart of the new Tyler Brule magazine is original coverage in global affairs, business, architecture, culture and design. It will be interesting to see if the combination of a print magazine and a web-based broadcast component (delivering bulletins, mini-documentaries and talk-formats) will put Tyler Brule on the throne of global trends once again.

Swedish magazine DI reports that among the investors of the Tyler Brule magazine Monocle are a company called Ekstranda partially owned by the two H&M twins Jan and Stefan Bengtsson. PG Nilsson is another owner of Ekstranda and he explains the driving force behind the investment: “Tyler Brule is an interesting creator of magazines and he has put together a nice team and has good financing” (my translation).

Except for Tyler Brule the team includes editor Andrew Tucker from the Independent, editor for the Americas Ann Marie Gardner from The New York Times ‘T’ Travel magazine and Dan Hill as director of web and broadcasting, former head of Interactive Design and Technology at BBC. Richard Spencer Powell who also has joined forces with Tyler Brule at Wallpaper will be creative director. “I’m happy to report that all the people I listed on my dream team a year ago have joined for the launch of this project,” says Tyler Brule.

Monocle is published from London (with bureaux in Tokyo, New York and Zürich) by Winkontinent, the editorial and broadcast arm of Winkorp, Tyler Brule’s Zürich-based holding company.

Tyler Brule launched the style and fashion magazine Wallpaper in 1996. The magazine became one of the most influential new magazines of its time. Tyler Brule left Wallpaper in 2002 and has since then been working as a columnist for Financial Times and has been a host at the TV media magazine The Desk on BBC 4. Tyler Brule has also running Winkreative, a design agency with clients like Bally, Swiss air and Stella McCartney.

I’m sorry for the misspelled headline. Unfortunately I cannot change it because it is a permalink and there are some linking to it from here and there. I made a new post with a correct title instead.
