Being Tyler Brule

David Carlson, 28 May, 2009

Being Tyler Brule is a publication about Tyler Brûlé. Or rather, it’s a publication about the fascination of the jetset lifestyle and attitude that he portrays through his writing in Monocle and FT.

You can read that the blog was inspired by Gridskipper´s series “What would Tyler Brûlé do?”. But even more, as they say, by this clip:

Being Tyler Brule guides you through the jungle that is business class flights, bespoke tailoring and handpicked coffee beans. They will soon also be presenting you with an infallible reference list that will be known as the Tyler Brûlé Index (TBI). So that you can keep up with how you are doing on your way to becoming Tyler.

Never use white type on a black background

David Carlson, 25 May, 2009

Never Use White Type on a Black Background: And 50 Other Ridiculous Design Rules is a new and interesting book from Bispublishers.

The world of fashion and design is inundated with a seemingly endless list of rules. Think of ‘Less is More’, ‘Form Follows Function’, ‘Keep it Simple’, ‘Dress Your Age’ and the list goes on and on. They’re familiar sayings that some designers consider to be valuable words of wisdom, which serve as a guiding line and source of inspiration.
To others, these rules are mere restrictions: design dogmas and fashion formulae that need to be bended, twisted or broken altogether.

good_design
Granted, creativity knows no bounds and therefore it seems rather ridiculous to restrict that creativity by sticking to a couple of age-old rules. However, in some cases the rules seem more like the basic principles that every designer should love, honor and obey.
Never Use White Type on a Black Background And 50 other Ridiculous Design Rules collects 51 famous and obscure design rules that are accompanied by chronologically placed quotes (courtesy of designers, architects, fashion designers, typographers and other creatives) and an image that either negates or supports the rule.

design_advice
Whichever side of the fence you yourself are sitting on in the rules debate, you’re bound to find this book a source of inspiration, comfort, joy or just good old fun. Enjoy.

How do you integrate a basket in the handlebar? That was the question the Danish based design company Goodmorning Technology asked themselves when developing the city bike concept for New York Department of Park & Recreation. They wanted a basket that would be at the
bike the whole time and that never could be stolen or lost. In the New York Bike project phase they developed the special integrated handlebar that will help many a biker from now one!

The bike porter is made of tubes and is as easy to put on your bike as a normal handlebar. Goodmorning Technology has developed a whole range in many colors and with integrated designed bags if you wish! The patent is filled out the and all intellectual property belongs to Goodmorning Technology. The bike porter is perfect for fixies and other street bikes as well as standard bikes.

The basket will from now one never be stolen, easy destroyed and at the same time, the designed bags are easy to fill up in the shops and take along. You can also use your own bag, laptop or whatever you need!

Reusable bag by Claesson Koivisto Rune

David Carlson, 17 May, 2009

claesson_koivisto_rune

Plastic bags are made from fossil-based petrochemicals. And then they’re thrown away. At best, in to the trash, but for some reason also in to the oceans. This leads to the death of tens of thousands of seabirds every year. But the obvious solution is not spelled Paper Bag, as one might believe. Just the higher weight of the paper bag alone leads to seven (7) times the fuel consumption (of fossil-based petrochemicals) in transport when compared to the plastic bag. Best of all is to use some sort of reusable bag when shopping.

claesson_koivisto_rune

The simple idea from the design and architect trio Claesson Koivisto Rune is to combine. The design of the plastic bag is optimal. One front side and one back, both with double-folded integrated handles, joined together, makes the bag both roomy and sturdy. At the same time, the non-profit organisation Stockholm City Mission, receives 16 tonnes every year of donated fabrics and clothing that are not suitable to be sold. Combined – an existing construction design and an existing eco-friendly raw material – they make a new, greener alternative to the plastic bag.

claesson_koivisto_rune

Finite natural resources are spared. The mountains of excess textiles that otherwise would have been disposed of find a good use. The homeless get an opportunity to work. (In a non-repetitive process, through the unlimited choice of creative fabric combinations.) And the Stockholm City Mission can create some revenue to help run their organisation… Claesson Koivisto Rune says that they can only see up-sides to this project. That is their reward.

RE/DO at Milan Design Week

David Carlson, 15 May, 2009

re/do

RE/DO installation was born from the collaboration between Milan based architecture practice Piuarch and PSLAB Beirut which since 2004 explores new ideas pertaining to light designing and building site specific light solutions. The installation took place at Piuarch studio in Brera area during Milan Design Week in the context of Fuori Salone 2009 (21-27 April).

The conceptual installation expresses shared thoughts between Piuarch Milan and PSLAB Beirut on light and architecture, on design and rethinking an object or a building from a different perspective giving new life to existing objects.

An idea, 3 weeks to make it happen, 702 plastic gallons reinterpreted as lighting objects, wired and assembled as modules in Beirut and with these a 5,5 x 8 mt light wall built on site in Milan during a weekend as an intervention on the façade of the building and in the context of the courtyard where Piuarch studio is located.

re/do

Finally some thoughts behind the project:

(CONSIDER IT AGAIN)

THE NEED FOR MORE DESIGNED OBJECTS. HOW LONG WILL WE STILL DESIGN OBJECTS?  WHAT IS THE USE OF THE NEW VERSION VERSUS THE OLD ONE?

(TO CONSUME)

DESIGNING

THE RECYCLING PROCESS, LIKE DESIGNING THE LIFE OF ANY OBJECT, FROM ITS PRODUCTION DATE (DATE OF BIRTH) TO ITS FIRST LIFE/FIRST USE, GIVING IT A CHANCE  TO A NEW LIFE WHERE IT CAN EXIST AGAIN.

(SHIFT FUNCTION)

BETWEEN THE FIRST LIFE AND THE SECOND ONE, A REINCARNATION OF AN OBJECT. DESIGNING IN THIS CASE CONSISTS OF PRESENTING TO THE PUBLIC WHAT HAS BEEN ALREADY DESIGNED.  DOING AGAIN AND DIFFERENTLY DEFINES THIS PROCESS.
