As I have reported earlier my company Designboost presented a Miniboost from the Stockholm Furniture Fair/Stockholm Design Week as a Boost Cast the other week. It’s like a relay race around the notion of sustainable cities with questions as batons passed on to new boosters. The film above is with the Stockholm based design and architect trio Claesson Koivisto Rune.
“CORIAN super-surfaces” is the name of the exhibition that DuPont Corian and Amanda Levete_Architects (AL_A) will create for the next edition of the Milan design week taking place in April 2009.
What will be presented is the lounge environment re-defined: a conceptual interpretation of the lounge as a dynamic space of transition between neutral and active states, “CORIAN super-surfaces” is a frozen moment within a dynamic sequence of transformations which morph DuPont Corian solid surfaces into a fluid and elastic collection of integrated kitchen, bathroom and flooring concepts highlighted by an astonishing feature wall. It will happen through a combination of advanced digital design technologies, innovative fabrication techniques, and fascinating lighting effects, AL_A will reveal the “super-surfaces” nature of DuPont Corian and highlight its inherent ability to modify perceptions of space and form. The show will be open April 22 to July 30 and the location is the Corian store at via San Nicolao 4 in Milan, Italy.
Amanda Levete is an architect and designer whose critically acclaimed work is both award winning and seminal in its influence. She is the director of AL_A, an innovative London based design practice with a visionary agenda focused on the integration of design, research, technology, and materiality. Amanda Levete trained at the Architectural Association, worked for Richard Rogers, and then joined Future Systems as a partner in 1989, before launching AL_A in 2009.
The Peepoo bag by PeePoople is a really great invention which I have written about before, especially its life saving capacity. It came to my knowledge that there is a new presentation video of the Peepoo bag at Youtube and of course I will publish it immediately.
Still, 40% of the worlds population don’t have a toilet. It’s one of the worlds most serious problems. As a consequence, one child in the world dies every 15 seconds due to contaminated water. The innovative Peepoo bag doesn’t need any infrastructure and there is no investment cost. Peepoo is a personal single use toilet and it’s simply designed for the people with the weakest purchasing power in the world. It can offer them health, safety, privacy and hygiene.
22 Januari Peepoople did a presentation of the project at WHO in Geneva. I cross my fingers for Peepoo to be successful!
DAMn°’s Peach Kauch twists the idea of a design talk: serious one moment, the next an entertaining amateur hour for professional minds.
An on-stage interaction between designers and a few famous quotes from the mouths of such luminaries as Albert Einstein, Arne Jacobsen, Orson Welles, David Hockney and Frank Zappa, it’s an attempt to talk about design in the way people experience it: spontaneously, as part of life, love, death any anything between.
Wallpaper magazine just relaunched their video channel in widescreen format. They are doing it with a couple of films, one is a peek behind the scenes at Wallpaper design awards party in Paris.
KjellgrenKaminsky architects presents Villa Grow; a Villa that is adaptable to all kinds of families and can be extended as they grow.
Today most houses are built with a traditional nucleus family in mind, but few families look like that nowadays, so why should their houses? We have designed a series of Villas that suites modern families with different needs. The villas have a common basic unit that can be extended and customized in a number of ways, offering suitable alternatives for all. The video above shows it all. Or check out the sketches below.
Do you like the music in the video as well? It’s made by Derango.
Sometimes product design makes me really happy! Soon we can take a ride on Peak’s new bicycles, designed by talented Swedish designerErik Nohlin. He has managed to re-create the actual sign of the bike, taken away all the blingbling. And what is left is pure function - and pure beauty! I am looking forward to a bright spring on the roads!
Media architecture collective Urban Alliance has recently finished the Moodwall: a 24 meter long interactive light installation in Amsterdam.
The Moodwall is situated in a pedestrian tunnel and interacts with people passing by, improving the atmosphere in the tunnel and making people happy and feel less unsafe. The interactive urban wallpaper is built out of about 2500 leds behind a ribbed semi-transparent wall. The curves in the wall make it less suitable for grafitti and improve the visibility of the content for the side.
The resolution is horizontally stretched so the images of the screen are better for the side so people are stimulated to watch the screen from outside the tunnel. This prevents the tunnel to become a hang-out spot.
The Moodwall is a pilot project for a 70 meter long media wall proposal by Urban Alliance (in collaboration with Daan Hartoog) which won a competition for ideas to improve the public space of the social unsafe area of the Amsterdam Bijlmer.
Urban Alliance is a collaboration of: Studio Klink (architecture and design), Illuminate (interactive lighting and video content) and Cube (building and development).
The Moodwall was designed by Jasper Klinkhamer (Studio Klink) in collaboration with Remco Wilcke (Cube), who was also responsible for the construction. The content was developed by Hans van Helden and Matthijs ten Berge of Illuminate in collaboration with artist Matthias Oostrik and students of the dutch art academy HKU.
You can read about an earlier project here by Studio Klink which I wrote about a while ago.
The Applause Machines, designed by British artist Martin Smith and manufactured by Laikingland, are available in a range of five rather splendid colours. I wrote about it a while ago, but now I would like to show a short film as well. You just press the button and the Applause Machine enthusiastically claps its hands for you.
Laikingland will have an interactive installation of 50 - 60 Applause Machines on show at the Kinetica Art Fair that will be held at P3 in central London from 27 Feb - 2 March 2009. Sounds like great fun to see so many Applause Machines at the same time.

The collaboration comprises the creation of the ultimate travel accessory - a piece both timeless and functional. Available this spring, this limited edition weekend bag is a beautiful piece of design, innovation and craftsmanship from Italy.
“Valigia Peroni” is the definitive travel solution for the sophisticated jet setter. It embodies the best of versatility and can be used as a weekend bag, as well as a carry on bag when travelling long distances.
