O2 Cocoon mobile phone
The O2 Cocoon mobile phone designed by Swedish agency Syntes Studio is a stylish black and white clam shell with smooth lines that is full of functionality. The front of this handset has a hidden LED display that will not only tell you who is calling but will also tell you the time and turn into your alarm clock when you dock it in its Nest for charging at night. The O2 Cocoon portrays several innovative design features that add to the user experience, such as the scroll-wheel in the hinge, the stereo speakers on both sides and a unique battery cover release.
“Always let the relation between people and device be as humane as possible”, that is the mantra at Syntes Studio. Body and soul, hardware and software need to be developed in harmony to add strength to the emotional connections between the brand and the consumer. When Amsterdam based Streative Branding (you will probably find an interview with the founder Shari Swan here at David Report soon) were commissioned by O2 to search the world for new exciting design agencies to design O2’s own branded phones – it was this approach that caught O2’s attention and Syntes Studio won the pitch.
Here are some further words from Syntes Studio about the project and O2 Cocoon; “The greatest challenge in the project was to create a product design platform for O2, a physical embodiment of a brand that primarily has been exposed in advertising and other two dimensional media. The road map, how O2 step by step could turn into a product brand, was articulated in the overall concept “A life within” – a way of underscoring the operator’s role in a mobile phone. One of the phone concepts that were created around that theme was a phone the team named “the cocoon”.”
In conclusion the O2 Cocoon will wake you up in the morning, play your music on your way to and from work, capture you and your mates having a laugh, and be the last thing you see at night as it charges next to your bed in its own Nest.
