Salone Satellite 2007
The fourth day of the Milan Furniture Fair I cruised the aisles of the Salone Satellite (which celebrated its tenth edition). For those of you who have not been visiting Milan during the furniture fair, Salone Satellite is where the young designers are supposed to give the set up companies a lesson in creativity and fearlessness. But did they? Not really… I walked up and down, back and forth and felt that it actually was a bit boring. Of course there were some good exhibitors as well (which you will see at the pictures below) but the overall feeling was confusing. Is this the future? Where were the groove and the alternative to the establishment? I was also a bit confused why sustainable thinking was more or less non-existing in the stands (ok, the chairs out of old street signs was for sure a sustainable product, but maybe not out of an industrial context). I have to say that the correspondent show at the Stockholm Furniture Fair called Greenhouse is much better and has more personality. Don’t misunderstand me, I really would like the Salone Satellite to rock. My thoughts is not just a standard conservative reaction - during my days with David Design I gave a lot of just-out-of-school designers the possibility to get their designs into commercial production. I just missed a lot of the normal refreshing spirit that young designers can offer before they are trapped in the corporate pound.
Let’s hope for more and better ideas at next years Salone Satellite!
My earlier reports from the Milan Furniture fair is available here, here and here.
