Furnish is a new book from Die Gestalten Verlag which concentrates on the boundaries between different design disciplines where technology, graphic design and high-tech production processes plays an important part. The book documents recent work by designers, artists and architects that shows how they are using furniture in pioneering ways: as environment, as art object, as digital-organic growth, as mutation or as insertion. It is for sure some cutting-edge examples that are covering the pages of the book. Examples of the ongoing convergence between art and design.

I have been touching this subject in my different reports from the recent Milan Furniture and there is one question that comes to my mind - can everything be called design? What is art and what is design? If design is a visualisation of a business strategy, an industrial process so to say, could it then be art at the same time? It is a very interesting subject and I will soon return to it. The battle between rationalism and surrealism surely continues.

In a chapter of the book about customisation, as a way of giving individuality and uniqueness to everyday objects, there is a nice quote of Nicholas Cage from the David Lynch movie Wild at heart.
