Some words about Designboost

David Carlson, 31 October, 2007

jennifer_leonard

Jennifer Leonard was one of the boosters at the recent Designboost event in Malmö. Jennifer is also one of the writers of the blog of the social design network Design 21. The other day she posted an informative and interesting post about her own participation of Designboost. Here is a short excerpt:

Designboost was a stimulating mix of perspectives and projects; sights and sounds; cultures and conversations. I left feeling inspired to return next year – to sustain, so to speak, the sustainable – and to continue, personally, to make connections each and everyday with people and ideas that uplift, push, surprise and keep me engaged with the “stuff” that really matters, immaterial and otherwise.

Boost show opening

David Carlson, 29 October, 2007

The Designboost Boost show opened little more a week ago with an inaugural speech by Ewa Kumlin, the general manager of Svensk Form. The Boost show is built on an imaginary “sustainable wheel” with seven “spokes”. They are: environmental influence, innovation, emotional connection, aesthetics, quality, authenticity and compatibility. Our idea is that you have to have a holistic perspective when trying to define sustainable design. You will then avoid sustaining the unsustainable so to speak. The Boost show runs until November 17th in a former cinema at Fridhemstorget in Malmö. Please find a few pictures from the opening of the Boost show below with some of the attending “boosters”.

Designers that want to be artists 3

David Carlson, 25 October, 2007

Next in line in my series “Designers that want to be artists” is Belgian designer Arne Quinze, most famous for his participation in the Burning man project. Below you will see some of his objects in the intersection of design and art. I started this series as a follow up to my latest bulletin called Vulgarism.

Designboost - day two

David Carlson, 22 October, 2007

Day two of my event Designboost took place at Europaporten conference center. During the day 25 different boosters talked about sustainable design from many different angles. The audience (there were approximate 500 of them) got the chance to listen to everything from designers, architects and ethnographers to trend researchers, professors and ice cream makers. The different talks turned inside out of the ordinary definitions of sustainable design and hopefully it will make the audience challenge it as well. The speakers were (in chronological order): Satyendra Pakhale, Jens Martin Skibsted, Mathilda Tham, Tim Power + Thomas Sandell, Olof Kolte, Stephen Burks, Kristina Börjesson, Jonas Bylund, Kristina Dryza, Brent Richards, Jody Turner, Mårten Claesson, Sean Pillot de Chenecey, Kevin Low, Katarin Graffman + Ida Hult, Jennifer Leonard, John-Michael Ekeblad, Björn Jeffery, Nina Jobs, Oliver Ike and Ewa Kumlin + Kerstin Sylwan. On top of this Christer Larsson from City of Malmö held the inaugural speech and Anjali Haryana interacted with the audience in some different short body stretch sessions. Below follows some pictures from the different boost chats.

Designboost - day one

David Carlson, 20 October, 2007

Designboost started with Boost meetings in Turning Torso (designed by Santiago Calatrava). The approximate 75 boosters interacted in 29 unique boost meetings concerning participants and themes. It was a great success. Not only were the different topics discussed lively, a lot of friendships were created as well! According the the participating boosters there were an unpretentious atmosphere during the complete event. Side by side with high quality of content that was one of the major goals for me as one of the organisers. All boost meetings were documented in film and the conclusions will be released in the Designboost 2007 book and dvd early February 2007. Both extracts from the movies and description in writing will be put up at the Designboost web as soon as it has been worked through. Below are some images from the boost meetings and the boost meeting lunch. A presentation of day two of Designboost will be put up here shortly.

Right vs. left brain

David Carlson, 13 October, 2007

Which way do you see the dancer turn? If you see her turn clockwise, then you use more of your right side of your brain, and vice versa you use the left side of your brain (the text information in the beginning of the film is wrong…) However, most people will see the dancer turning anti-clockwise.

Normally you say that the right side of the brain is more creative orientated and the left side more logic. According to me the dancer turns clockwise! Do the test with your friends, it’s quite astonishing to see that different people see the dancer turn in different directions.
