Magic moving images

David Carlson, 30 July, 2007

The new book Magic moving images from Tarquin Publications is a nice example of an old way to show apparent motion - through sequences of still images in rapid succession. This was actually the only way to see moving pictures in the early years. Even if we live in a more or less digital world the Magic moving images is still fascinating!

Summer house in Stockholm archipelago

David Carlson, 27 July, 2007

Stockholm architects Tham & Videgård Hansson has developed a nice light-weight building in wood and glass as a summer house in the Stockholm archipelago. The layout of the plan is generated by the specifics of the site, the house being placed on the flat surface between two mountain rocks and turning simultaneously towards the sun the south and frontally towards the sea in the west. With the small rooms located in the back the rest of the house stand out as an open platform crisscrossed by sliding glass. The house is organised in layers. The big rooms expand in open relationshp to the wooden deck outside of the house. The zig-zagged layout also offers several outside places sheltered from the strong wind.

North tiles in Paris 2007

David Carlson, 27 July, 2007

Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec have released some new images from their installation for Designers’ Days in Kvadrat showroom. 14/06/07 - 18/06/07 in Galerie des Saints-Pères, Paris.

The textile walls are constructed with individual foam fabric tiles called North tiles which connect together using an ingenious folding system. Originally conceived for the Kvadrat Stockholm showroom. The North Tiles system has created a new way of creating and dividing space with the added benefit of inherent soundproofing. Moreover, the simple assembly allows the walls to be easily reconfigured.

Dan Golden wool rugs

David Carlson, 25 July, 2007

Dan Golden is a New York based artist who has shown his playful yet sophisticated work in galleries for nearly a decade. In 2006 Dan Golden joined forces with interior designer Ford Lininger and together they created and developed a series of luxurious hand-tufted New Zealand wool carpets. The pattern of the carpets is based on the artwork of Dan Golden. The launch of the collection was spring 2007.

With the carpet collection Dan Golden and Ford Lininger would like to bring fresh and bold design to interior spaces. They are passionate about environments and take great measures to make their carpets in the most environmentally and socially responsible way. According to Dan and Ford the carpets are meant to last a lifetime. That’s something I like very much. We definitely need to start to produce less but better products. I recently read a nice quote from the Gucci family that concerns this: ”Quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten”.

Lacoste launches Plastic polo by Michael Young

David Carlson, 24 July, 2007

Lacoste plastic polo

Fashion brand Lacoste has recently started a collaboration with Michael Young for the LACOSTE Holiday Collector’s Series, where the brand on annual bases selects a designer from outside the fashion world to ‘reinterpret’ its iconic polo shirt and to challenge its production methods and processes. The idea for the pattern of the Plastic Polo comes from some colourful gardening gloves with latex coating that Michael Young found in Japan some years ago. With the Lacoste project he got a chance to explore the technique. The first invited designer for the Lacoste Holiday Collector’s series was Tom Dixon with his Techno Polo and Eco Polo.

C’etait un rendezvous

David Carlson, 19 July, 2007

Some time ago I wrote about the Ferrari 250 GTO, one of the greatest sports cars ever. In this movie called C’etait un rendezvous by Claude Lelouch, somone (there are a lot of talk going on wether it was himself or a F1 driver that were behind the wheel) drives an iconic Ferrari 275 GTB (at least that’s what the myth says) through the early morning streets of Paris. The film is recorded back in 1976 and it has a beautiful ambiance. Here you can follow the route via Google maps.

I think C’etait un rendezvous works perfectly as some nice summer entertainment here at David Report. Put up the volume…

Klaus Haapaniemi for Iittala

David Carlson, 16 July, 2007

Klaus Haapaniemi for Iittala

Klaus Haapaniemi has been working with a lot of interesting companies; garment prints for Diesel, Levis, Marimekko, Dolce & Gabbana, Cacharel and Bela’s Dead, a new brand. He’s an important rising star in illustration and design. This year Finnish household brand Iittala has launched his prints on a series of ceramics called Taika. The strong decorative style of the Taika series may surprise those who are used to seeing Iittala representing traditional Nordic functionality and simple design forms. To counterbalance the exuberance of the decoration, the design adopted for the pieces in the Taika series is that of Heikki Orvola’s Aika with its classic, clean lines, which was launched 2006.

Taika adds a distinctive alternative to the Iittala range, taking further the concept of mix and match. The Taika objects are available in two colour schemes which both mix well with for example the new Iittala colours, sand and ultramarine. The folklore patterns of Taika will bring a touch of magic to any home, and add a little joy to everyday life. You could almost refer to the as illustrations of the Finnish national epic, Kalevala. By the way, Taika means magic in Finnish.

water

my daughter, who is 4 and a half years old, can already recognize hundreds of brands. but she doesn’t know that water comes from the sky, unless it rains. and she doesn’t know that it comes from the ground, even when it forms a stream….she is only four years old, so she thinks water comes from supermarkets……..she thinks that it comes in bottles.

with some embarrassment i have to tell her that this is not entirely true.

so to teach my daughter about where water comes from, we went high into the mountains. we walked along streams with river beds made from black rocks while angry dark grey clouds rained on our heads……we saw dark holes from which fresh water sprang, drilled deep into the earth…..this was very curios, but very mysterious for her - so she still thinks that water comes from the supermarket.

with some embarrassment i have to tell her that this is not true.

This post is written by Tim Power, one of my friends that are contributing to David Report.
