Not just smart

S;  It is not the speed, but all about the society .

Some people think design means how it looks. But of course, if you dig deeper, it is really how it works. Most people may respond that is about functions. But again, that could be far beyond the technical specifications. When you get something, you have to really grok what it is all about. It takes a passionate commitment to really thoroughly understand something, chew it up, do not just quickly swallow it.

A personal assistant built into the latest iphone is wowing owners with its ability to answer odd questions. The new Siri feature was designed to respond to spoken requests for information such as the location of the nearest cinema. But gadget-lovers have discovered that its range of expertise is actually far wider. This voice-recognition app brings human responses and sometimes a touch of humor to any question the user might have.

When one user asked about life’s meaning, he was informed: “All evidence to date suggests it’s chocolate.” To the same question from another owner, Siri replied “42” – a nod to classic sci-fi series The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Another user asked: “Why am I here?” The system replied: “I don’t know. Frankly, I’ve wondered that myself.” And when a smitten buyer asked “Will you marry me?”, the software responded: “My End User Licensing Agreement does not cover marriage. My apologies.” When another asked “Why are you so awesome?”, the iPhone answered: “I just am.”

As well as answering spoken questions with written replies on screen, Siri can talk, call numbers read to it and set reminders. But websites have already sprung up to record the product’s replies to more unusual queries. Though this interface may reveal its holes and problems with the increasing number of users, it will create a new amusement culture, ‘Talking to Siri’. Meanwhile, Siri will evolve along with ‘pleasant errors’ that many users experience.

This is simply a device; however, it gives us new dimensions. Technology is not the subject in awe, but it should be used. At the same time, what we need to be aware is the device answering in that manner is the result of a person, company or community that has given ‘the meaning of life’ a thought. Design is the conscious effort to impose meaningful order in humanity that will shape our lives for better. Today’s competition is no longer a fight over hardware or even software. It is about life, meaning, value and beauty to be shared.
