The small and personal Helenekilde bath hotel and boardinghouse in Tisvildeleje on the northern tip of the Danish island Sjaelland is the perfect hideaway for a relaxed weekend. Helenekilde is a good example of a supreme regionalism. Something at least I personally are looking for in a time of heavy homogenisation and globalisation. Don’t miss to take a walk along the beach if you are going there. It almost has a rough Bretagne feeling to it.
20ltd is exclusively collaborating with Lane Crawford in the final stage of The Collective: Synergy in Fashion, their innovative design project celebrating the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. From October 1-20, 20ltd are offering for sale six one-of-a-kind designer outfits by Phillip Lim, Burberry Prorsum, Costume National, Maison Martin Margiela, Neil Barrett & Rick Owens. 100% of the proceeds will go to ‘Special Relief Funds for Children affected by the Sichuan Earthquake’ established by Unicef under its ‘Driving Dreams’ project.
Maison Martin Margiela’s Badminton-inspired outfit is an abstract series of shuttlecocks, all intricately hand assembled to create a backless top. A total of 109 white and yellow plastic shuttlecocks and 36 goose feathered shuttlecocks are ingrained in this chain of avant-garde apparel.
Martin Margiela is perhaps the most underexposed designer in the world of contemporary luxury fashion — and deliberately so. His clothes are branded with blank labels, his different collections are merely numerical categories, and even his catwalk models have hit the runway in veils. In 1988, the graduate of Antwerp’s Royal Academy of Fine Arts and Jean Paul Gaultier’s former assistant launched the Maison Martin Margiela brand, which sees everyday items from unexpected perspectives and transforms the mundane and banal into beautiful treasures.
A stunning 12-page visual collaboration between Grace Jones and Chris Cunningham heads up the forthcoming issue of Dazed & Confused, with the avant-garde film director digitally morphing the iconic performer to reveal the Devil Inside… Grace Jones explains her take on the shoot with Chris – “It’s not fashion, it’s an anti-fashion shoot. He’s shooting me like art.”
Chris Cunningham’s inspiration came from his 2005 short film “Rubber Johnny” – ‘When I made the images for Rubber Johnny, I wanted to make some Nubian versions to accompany them. For me, Grace has the strongest iconography of any artist in music. She’s definitely the most inspiring person I’ve worked with so far.”
There are still tickets för the Boost Talks at Designboost which takes place in Malmö next Thursday October 16th. Spotify is an online music service offering users the ability to stream music on demand using Spotify’s unique technology. Spotifly plans to roll out invites to their free service gradually over the coming months, while premium access to Spotify has now been made fully available (the premium subscription service is without advertising). Recently Spotify has signed groundbreaking licensing deals with companies including Universal Music Group, Sony BMG, EMI Music, Warner Music Group, Merlin, The Orchard and Bonnier Amigo.
Fortunately I have been one of the selected persons that have been able to try Spotify for a year or so. I really recommend it! The interface is recognizable (kind of iTunes look) and the selection of songs are picking up quite fast with the new licensing deals.
Now I just would like to be able to connect Spotify to my LastFM account and also play Spotify through my AirTunes system at home. Then my music life will never be the same…
UPDATE FROM RASMUS: You can actually both scrobble to last.fm and play music over AirTunes. Grab this for the sound over air and this for the scrobbling.
I was thinking about a quote by Stella McCartney the other day. It goes “I think doing anything is better than nothing”. It was her answer on a question why she sometimes wear leather shoes. I think that here answer is really true and it covers difference sectors as well.
If we think of sustainability for example. Sustainability is not about doing nothing (even if a lot if people seem to believe that…). It’s impossible to be static in a dynamic world.
And if we talk about food. I’m a vegetarian myself, but I eat fish. I don’t know if there are a special term for that. But anyway, quite often I have to defend why I eat fish. Isn’t that strange?
Nowadays when I have to answer that question I borrow Stella’s quote; “I think doing anything is better than nothing”.
French designer Etienne Meneau has made a new drinking glass in a limited edition of 12 pieces. It’s called Little Heart, made of borosilicat glass and takes 20cl. If you remember my earlier post about Etienne Meneau you will probably find a clear releationship with this glass and the former carafes.
